History
Before the colonization, this area was part of the Huetar indigenous people. The first Chief of State, Juan Mora Fernández, offered land to any and all who constructed roads to the North region of Costa Rica. This drove many to this part of the country. In 1862 there were approximately 5738 inhabitants.
