From Wiki Costa Rica
Laguna Arenal is a man-made reservoir, constructed by the ICE to generate electricity. It serves as the main source of electricity in Costa Rica, especially during the dry season.
Numerous hotels and cabins are located in its shores, and many activities can be practiced, for instance: fishing, boating, rowing, and windsurfing.
The water used to generate electricity is drained towards the North Pacific region, where it is used to irrigate thousands of acres of lands.

Getting there
There are two ways to get to Laguna Arenal, both roads lead to the only road surrounding the lake.
- From San Carlos drive west towards the town of La Fortuna, continue west towards the volcano for half an hour and you'll reach the lake.
- From the Inter-American highway, arrive to the town of Cañas. Head east towards the town of Nuevo Arenal, that road will lead to the lake.
