Costa Rica has more then 615 different species of wildlife per 10.000 square kilometers. It is home to a number of exotic flora and fauna. There are 12 key ecological zones.

In an effort to preserve the natural beauty and the surroundings, 25% of the territory has been separated and converted to parks and reserves to keep it untouched by humans.

Costa Rica has 25 national parks, 58 wildlife refuges, 32 protected zones, 15 zones of wetland areas, 11 forest reserves and 8 biological reserves.
