Many tourists to the Turrialba region visit the Volcanoes. Hotels in the area are often mountain lodges with nature guides and tour operators, excellent views of the Turrialba and Irazu Volcanoes, as well as the river valleys which have made this area famous. The Rio Pacuare (Suerre), with headwaters in in the southern part of Turrialba Canton, is considered by some to be the most perfect river for whitewater rafting in Costa Rica. Along one stretch of 30 kilometers, between the towns San Martin and Siquirres, it is Class III and IV rapids of whitewater rafting. It slices through rainforests and mountain gorges and falls into the Caribbean sea.
Just 7 miles north of Turrialba City, tourists will find the Guayabo National Monument, the most important archeological site discovered in Costa Rica. A 4WD car is recommended for this drive.
