Juan Santamaría Airport is the main international airport of Costa Rica. It is located in the province of Alajuela, 15 Km from the capital. This airport is named after a national hero. There is one other international airport in Costa Rica:

Juan Santamaría Airport is the center for connecting flights of TACA group and services other airliners that fly Central America, North America, South America and Europe. There is also a NASA hangar that fly experimental aircrafts for detailed carthography.
The airport, the most important in Central America with almost 3 millions PAX, has the usual assortment of duty-free shops. It also has a food court that includes some fast-food restaurants. The airport also has a VIP lounge for first and business class travelers.
Juan Santamaria International has been operated by Alterra Partners since 2001 as part of a plan to improve the airport by the Costa Rican government. The relationship between Alterra and the government has been difficult and this situation has delayed the modernization plans.
Costa Rica charges a US$ 26 departure tax which must be paid in cash (U.S. dollars or Costa Rican colones) or by Visa (Master Card and Amex are not accepted).
The Bernardo Soto highway goes west from the airport and towards the pacific coast, whereas the General Canas highway goes east towards the capital city of San Jose.
