Rincón de la Vieja National Park is located in the provinces of Alajuela and Guanacaste, and consists of 14 thousand Hectares of protected land. It includes two volcanoes: Rincón de la Vieja and Santa María and it was declared National Park in 1973.

Visitor Services
The administration office is located 25km from the city of Liberia, going through Colonia Blanca. There are trails from the administration office, to Las Pailas, and to the summit of the Rincón de la Vieja, and from Hancienda Guachipelín to Las Pailas. Camping is allowed, and drinkable water and latrines are available.
Geology
There are a total of 9 craters, but only the Rincón de la Vieja is active. The highest one is the Santa María crater, which stands at 1900m(6233ft). The Von Seebach crater has a turquoise colored lake.
Besides the volcano, there are very scenic places in the park. There is a beautiful lake south of the main crater, where tapirs can be seen drinking water.
In the south part of the base of the volcano, the areas called Las Pailas and Las Hornillas are the most attractive places for the tourists. These areas (of approximately 50 Hectares) have hot springs, which form hot-water rivers.
The volcano has 1916 meters of altitude (6286 feet), and encompasses 6 levels of ecosystems: from tropical rain forest to mountainous pluvial forest. The eastern part of the volcano received rain year-long, but the western part has a characteristic dry season weather.
Wildlife
Visitors can spot spider monkeys, howling monkeys, capucchino monkeys, sloths, and more than 300 species of birds. Tapirs can be seen in Los Jilgueros lake.
Trails
Trails start in the Hacienda Santa María (built in the 19th century), go through waterfalls, sulfur springs, up to the summit, 18km later. It takes around 2 days to traverse it. Hikers should report to the park office the entrance and exit dates of their hike. The best season to hike is during the dry season (December-April).
